
Phelan, Sidney Towner Papers
Sidney Towner Phelan was born in St. Louis on March 3, 1896. Phelan volunteered to drive ambulances for the French Army after the United State entered the war in April 1917. Phelan's unit, the Section Sanitaire Unis 646, United States Army Ambulance Service, received numerous awards and citations for its service including the Fourragere of the Croix de Guerre. In his letters to family back home, Phelan vividly described his experiences as an ambulance driver on the Western Front. His collection also includes a large photo album.
