March 21, 1918 Dearest Mother, [censor’s stamp] I got a big bunch of letters the other day but all of them were old letters from January. I can't understand why they take so long to get here. would get a little action. Months and months of repos would get on anyone's nerves. There is lots of consolation in good weather, good quarters, good food but in spite of that the idleness is getting us. Val must be going great guns I didn't realize what a proposition he was up against. He always was so little of a

student, while showing so much initiative, aggressiveness, and executive ability. I never doubted his ability to manage anything he undertook and do it well but I didn't think he could undertake a slow, exact, student's word and do it. That kind of work though is just what he needs it will give him the method and some of the knowledge he needs to go with his ability. I certainly hope to see him soon in four or five months not much chance of that though. Lots of love, Towner
