Bartlett, Dan Collection
Dan Bartlett was a junior at Washington University when he joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1917 in order to take part in the war already raging in Western Europe. Bartlett was trained at Fort Riley, Kansas and was later commissioned a lieutenant in Battery D, 340th Field Artillery, 164th Brigade, 89th Division of the U.S. Army. While serving in France, he was present when fellow Washington University student and artillery officer, Charles Duncker was felled. In this collection, we even have a piece of paper that was purportedly torn by the very shell fragments that killed Duncker. After the war, Bartlett became a St. Louis City Police Commissioner.
