Ben M. Neal letter to Dr. Henry Milton Whelpley - October 31, 1918

Transcript

Jefferson City, October 31, 1918. Dear Sir:- President Woodrow Wilson is the greatest world figure in the most terrific conflict of all times. Our Government is under Democratic direction. President [Abraham] Lincoln said, “Don’t swap horses while crossing the stream.” Loss of Democratic control of the Senate or House would be construed by our enemies as a criticism by us of our Government in the conduct of the war and might cause much unnecessary blood shed and loss of life. In connection with the statement regarding loss of life, we call attention to the fact that our party is pledged to, by sufficient appropriation and also legislation, the safeguarding of the public health. Won’t we best uphold President [Woodrow] Wilson by voting the Democratic ticket, thus proclaiming to the Hun and the world that we are a united nation? If these are your sentiments we will appreciate your active support. Very Sincerely yours, Ben M Neal State Chairman.
