U.S PICTORIAL SERVICE Charlie Chaplain, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. LOS ANGELES.- These famous screen stars do their “bit” by helping the U.S. Marine Corps to recruit men. Even dainty Mary Pickford-the bit o’ Dresden china, says she’d be a U.S. Marine if she were a boy. It’s a wonderful service! Its members are trained as infantrymen, artillerymen, signalmen, engineers and aviators. If you want to serve your country in a sort of a different kind of way and get the training that fits you to fight on land, sea, or in the air, join the U.S. Marines! It means fighting efficiency. This Photo Furnished by U.S. MARINE CORPS RECRUITING STATION 122 NORTH SEVENTH STREET, ST. LOUIS, [Missouri]

Description

This World War I poster is part of a larger collection of propaganda material issued throughout Missouri during the war. These artfully crafted posters were distributed to help recruit men for the Navy and Marines, raise money for the war effort, and sustain public morale. This poster was used to encourage men to join the U.S. Marines and features Douglas Fairbanks holding Charley Chaplin and Mary Pickford on his shoulders, surrounded by six soldiers. There are additional illustrations around the photograph, and Charlie Chaplin’s “Little Tramp” character is featured prominently in the background.
