
Leonard, Esther Papers
Dr. Esther Leonard served as an Army contract surgeon during World War I. Dr. Leonard signed her contract of service on May 21, 1918, and underwent anesthesia training at the U.S. Army General Hospital No. 1 in New York City. She was among the first contract surgeons who sailed for Europe in the spring of 1918. In France, Dr. Leonard worked at an evacuation hospital in Souilly (Meuse) and the Anesthetic Unit No. 1 at Vichy, where she served until the end of the war. Dr. Leonard's collection includes her official paperwork and ephemera collected during her service.
