Koch was enlisted on the 15th of June, 1905, at St. Louis, Missouri, as a private in Company D, First Regiment Infantry, National Guard of Missouri. Discharged June 14, 1908, expiration service. Reenlisted June 18, 1908, Company D, First Infantry. Appointed sergeant. Transferred to Company M, as sergeant, SO#21, June 4, 1909. Appointed 1st sergeant CO #1, June 5, 1909. Discharged June 17, 1911, expiration service. Reenlisted June 18, 1911, Company M, 1st Infantry. Commissioned First Lieutenant, Company M, to rank from May 20, 1913. Commissioned Captain, Company M, April 3, 1915, to rank from December 22, 1914. Mustered into Federal service June 25, 1916. Mustered out of Federal service September 25, 1916. Called into Federal service March 25, 1917. Mustered into Federal service April 25, 1917. Commissioned Major, First Infantry, to rank from July 28, 1917. Drafted into Federal service August 5, 1917. Description Document signed by the Adjutant General of Missouri, J.H. McCord certifying the military enlistment of Major Joseph J. Koch from 1905-1917. This collection was compiled by Major Joseph Koch, a St. Louis, Missouri resident who served during the Punitive Expedition into Mexico with the First Missouri Infantry. During World War I, Major Koch was severely wounded in his left leg during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive while serving with the 35th Division, 137th Infantry.
