Cress, Cavalry, General Intermediate Depot, 2nd & Arsenal St., St. Louis, Missouri. 1. There is returned herewith the discharge certificate of Captain John Frank Hardesty to show the military record of this officer, as requested in letter of October 28, 1922 to General Alvord. 2. Captain Hardesty's Victory Medal application, found on file in this office, has been approved for clasps for Cambrai and Somme Defensives and a Defensive Sector clasp, and has been forwarded to the Depot Officer, General Supply Depot, U.S.A., Philadelphia, [Pennsylvania] By order of the Secretary of War: [William] A Woodlief Adjutant General 3 incls. discharge cert. extract from discharge cert. copy of order 24, W.D.7/23/[1917].

Description John Franklin Hardesty entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps and volunteered to serve as a surgeon with the British Army during WWI. In March of 1918, he was captured by Germans in Amiens, France. Hardesty was imprisoned at Ratstatt and Villingen Prisoner of War Camps for eight months. In this letter, Adjutant General Woodleif informed Colonel George O. Cress of St. Louis, Missouri, that Hardesty's discharge certificate had been amended to include the Victory Medal.
