INFORMATION ON AMERICAN MILITARY CEMETERIES IN EUROPE. 1. In order to perpetuate the memory of the Heroic Dead of the armed forces of the United States, the American Graves Registration Service, an agency of the War Department, was established in 1919 to care for and maintain the American military cemeteries in Europe, to furnish all helpful information and assistance to relatives and friends visiting these cemeteries and to assure always toward these Soldier Dead that proper respect which is their due. Of the 130,265 men in the armed forces of the United States who died during the World War, 30,822 are now buried in the American Military cemeteries in Europe. 2. These military cemeteries are located at the following points: Aisne-Marne, at Belleau (Aisne), France....2284 burials Brookwood, at Brookwood, Surrey, England....453 [burials] Flanders Field, at Waereghem, Belgium....366 [burials] Meuse-Argonne, at Romagne-sous-Montfaucon (Meuse), France....14191 [burials] Oise-Aisne, at Seringes-et-Nesles, (Aisne), France....6012 [burials] Somme, at Bony (Aisne), France....1830 St. Mihiel, at Thiaucourt (M. -et-M.), France....4151 [burials] Suresnes, at Suresnes (Seine), France....1534 [burials] Each of the above named cemeteries is in charge of a Superintendent, who is an ex-Service man appointed by the Secretary of War, and as such is the sole representative of the Graves Registration Service at the cemetery. Visitors should apply to him for all desired information. In each cemetery there is a reception room built for the convenience of visitors. At the Meuse-Argonne Cemetery as Hostess House is provided for visitors who desire to spend a day or more at the cemetery. This Hostess House is open from May 1st to October 1st; charges are nominal. Visitors to these cemeteries frequently request photographs and to meet this demand sample photographs of all cemeteries (individual graves excepted) have been placed in the reception-rooms; each sample being numbered. A letter to the Chief Signal Officers, United States Army, Washington, D.C., accompanied by the price and the number noted on the sample, will insure prompt mailing of duplicate photographs to any address indicated. 3. In the event it is desired to have a floral decoration of natural flowers purchased and placed on the grave of a relative or friend, the amount to be spent should be mailed to the American Graves Registration Service, 20 rue Molitor, Paris-XVI, France, where careful attention will be given to the request and an official receipt will be furnished for the money. Artificial wreaths or flowers are not permitted on the grave sites. After the decoration is made, the donor will be notified by these Headquarters and will be furnished complete data as to the kind of flowers comprising the decoration, together with the receipted bill of the florist or check number by which the latter was paid. 4. Requests should show clearly the full name of deceased, together with rank and organization if known, and the home address of the donor to whom receipt should be sent.
