[7-14-1931] Dear Dorothy. We arrived 330 this P.M. certainly felt better after a good bath. This is a lovely hotel and we have the best of everything. Looks like a convention down stairs. One of the big lounges being used for Registration and a place to meet by morning there will be 100 Gold Star Mothers here and I believe there is an Army officer a bell hop and a maid for each one I was talking to one of the Officers and he telling all the attention that will shown us from now till we return I am afraid we will all be spoiled. The trip so far has been] Wednesday I just could not finish with every one talking at

once. We found 3 Kansas Mothers on the train and they were just lovely we have not seen them since but they are on the floor above us. This morning we were taken on a sight seeing trip in busses we were taken through the residential district sure surprised I expected to see them, I mean the homes, set in magnifecent yards and they are built right on the edge of the side walks four and five and more storries high all stone they dont look very home like to me. Ground sells for 32 thousand a foot. We got out and went through the new Cathedral of St John The Devine an Episcopal Cathedral that has been building for 20 years and will take forever to finish when finished it will cost 40 millions. We also got out and went the Aguar oh you know the fish house, and wonder of wonders saw the Statue of Liberty Went through the Getto. China Town. Through the most exclusive residential part Gramery Park Through apartment districts where apartments rent for 6 thousand a year. And more but I wont have any thing to tell you when I get back. Lunch then the crowd we were with wanted to take in a show we taxied to the Ostor and saw in free soul. The took our soiled clothes to wash and will return them this evening. Am having my crepe dress the one I left home in cleaned so it will be clean for the boat. I received all the lovely cards and good wishes among them a card from Aunt Lula received Nitas lovely letters have had more mail then any one in the party thanks for your kind attention. Tell every body that wants to know that we are being well taken care of. Love to all Mother Ill take back what I said about the Bell hop they call vallets If I only had Dad everything would be Jake -

Description | Agens Fraas wrote this letter to her daughter Dorothy on July 14, 1921 during the first part of her Gold Star Mothers pilgrimage. Agnes went to France to visit the grave of her son, Frank Fraas. Frank served in the 129th Field Artillery, 35th Division and died on October 7, 1918 from wounds received in action. |
