| Description | Letter to the Honorable S. Hubert Dent Jr. from the Secretary of War concerning section 4 of the bill that allowed the President to increase temporarily the military establishment of the United States. Section 4 of this bill addressed the recruitment of men to serve in the military. The Secretary of War suggested that all young men between the ages of 19 and 25 be liable for registration. This provided a better estimate of how many soldiers the United States could raise. This letter is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
