SUB-SECTOR E. PLAN OF DEFENSE. 1. MISSION: To hold the last the ground between the present line and the following general line: SCHNEIDENBACH (upper and lower) BENOIT, slopes east of SILLAKERWASEN, STEINABRUCH, DubarLE spur, MOREL-DEVILLE, ROBINSON, MICHENEAU, DEANGELY, ANWALDE. Maneuver for counter attack, in the Divisional sector, in so far as it concerns the segment NORD, will be by the crest (crete) of BREITFIRST-LANGENFELD, through the medium of the active Battalions of the Division now in Army reserve. II TROOPS: The defense of the subsector in the area above indicated is insured only by the two battalions of the regiment in line and the reserve of the sub-sector. The artillery has for its mission almost exclusively the support of the defense of the elements at the crest (LAYGENFELD-BREITFIRST) for the segment NORD, and to assure the debauch of the counter-attacks of the units of the army reserve by these crests. No reliance can be placed upon the support of the artillery for the defense of the sub-sector E. III NORTHERN LIMIT: Between the Division on our left and sub-sector E is the following line: LUTTENBACH (included in the sector of the Division on the left) NEIDEL, Point 07.68 (ROSPEL-WALD) Runz, point 90.74 (south of GASCHNEY). These three points being included in sub-cector E. A line joining 30.74 with Camp MOUNIER following the organizations of the intermediary positions. The trenches remaining in the charge of the Div. on the left, but the use of the road GASCHNEY-MOUNIER being permitted to both Divisions. Camp MOUNIER (in charge of sub-sector E.) lake FISCHBODLE-CASTEL-BERG. FERCHNESS-RHEINKOFF, pass of BRAMONT (belonging to sub-sector E), the valley of the MOSELOT, LABRESSE and CORNIMONT (belonging to the sub-sector E). SOUTHERN LIMIT: LANDERSEE-MARKUS Farm

MODIFICATION OF PART V1. RESERVES OF SUB-SECTOR. 1, The American Reserve consisting of two Companies and being considerably heavier than the French, a modification of employment is made necessary. 2 It is the opinion of the undersigned that the main danger point in the Sub-Sector in case of serious attack in METZERAL. An attack on METZERAL which succeeds or partially succeeds will be pushed up the valley an METTLACH. This should be foreseen and guarded against. 3 At this time the reserve is distributed as follows: Company A., Captain Rupert at Camp LEMAYEUR: Company H., Lieutenant Brown North west of Camp BENOIT (81.64). 4. The Commanding Officers of these two elements of the reserv have been instructed that in event of a serious attack on METZERAL and a progression up the Valley toward METTLACH, the reserves will be normally distributed in depth up the valley and resist the attack from the flanks- Company A operating form the south and Company H, operating from the north. In case of such attack the element at LEMAYEUR is ordered to at once send one platoon to a prepared position north west of Camp DUBARLE known as No. 1, notifying the C. O., of the Quartier ROBINSON of his action. The commanding officer of the element at 81.64 has received a similar order for the occupation of a prepared position on the north side of the valley west of ALTHENHOF. Reconnaissances are being made for the establishment of other and similar positions further in rear. 5. The remainder of these elements not thus automatically placed will remain at the disposal of the commanding officer of the sub-sector. V.B) PLAN OF DEFENSE OF THE QUARTIERS- The mission of Commanders of the Quartiers to which they should make flank with their garrisons of P.A. and reserves of the Quartier (Supported by the S.M., Cannons number 37 and number 58 and trench engines of E. Sector) consist of stopping all progress of the enemy by fire action from the depths between the first actual line, considered as line of resistance, and the General line: RUNZ- Crete ALTMATT-BRAUNKOFF
