Benoit Quarter 159th Inf. Reg't 3rd M.G. Co. GENERAL ORDERS SERVICE} Day time. One watchman (sentry) and one N.C.O. At night. One watchman (sentry) and a N.C.O. per gun. Fire is opened by order of the Commander of any P.A., or Machine Gun Commander, or by order of the Battalion Commander, in case of any enemy eruption in the zone covered by the machine guns. Fire is opened in case of enemy rifle fire, grenades, etc., on any of the G.C.'s; fire is opened immediately on respective points. TO OPEN FIRE A red bengal light indicates that the G.C.'s have been evacuated and a white bengal light that they have been again reoccupied. In case of fog; night service is taken, by each section and it is the section at Sampigny that, should the necessity arise, asks for the artillery barrage, by an intensive fire of its machine guns. GAS In case of bombardment, of any kind whatever, gas masks must be put on at once and not taken off again until an officer gives the order. LIAISON - By runners.- WORK All the guns, ammunition, material, etc., must be kept in order. All trenches and positions to be camouflaged and kept in order. Positions are to be surrounded with barbed wire, doors and accesory defenses. Block houses and other positions to be kept in order and bettered where possible. [NAME] GIESBOLD [P.A.] Metzeral [Guns] 2 Hotchkiss 2 Hotchkiss [Emplacements] 2 blockhouses fairly strong. 2 eventual emplacements. 1 sap for personel (: ot strong) 2 emplacements for anti-aircraft fire 1 sap (constructory) [MISSION] Counter preparation fire:- on the fringe of the Hunkoff wood (range 750 - 1700m) 1st Barrage:- Between the surveillance line and the support line (form Kiosque inclusive to the valley of Majersbrihl). 2nd Barrage:- In front of the line of resistance (east of Metzeral) from above B 2 (Kiosque H.Q.) to above Camp Girard. Anti-aircraft fire:- OBSERVATIONS (a) Each position has at least two eventual emplacements. (b) In case of an attack on the Kiosque all the guns can be instantly trained on this spot and have order to fire. (c) Each of these positions constitutes a G.C. in itself. (d) In case of fog the section at Sampigny signals for the artillery barrage by an intensive fire of its machine guns. (e) There exists, to the O.E. of the Collet de Braumkof, an emplacement for four guns for indirect fire. (f) All these guns can give either, harassing or direct fires. (g) Geisbold & Hunz are at the same time anti-aircraft positions. (h) There are no positions to retreat to, the machine guns resist on the spot and to the last man: & if the necessity arrives they put their guns out of action in order that the enemy may not be able to use them.
