April 25, [1917] Speaker Clark Washington D.C. Dear Senator To night I will send courage to you on the breath of love, that you may Stand up & fight that disgraceful Slavery bill called Compulsory Military Service. The people know that Wall St has “spoken” this measure into life also the War We know that the Munition Ring has fainted a streak of yellow up the spine of many of our Law-makers. but you refused this Coat of gold. You & the others who are men, We the Mothers of this land, ask the Angles of Light, Love & Power to aid you & them to kill this Slave Act. The ones who are exempt from war, have the Sole Power to declare war & Draft Measures. Let the People Say, The ones who pay. May God bless you and strengthen you to fight V.J. Description In this April 17, 1917, letter to Champ Clark, V.J. Rowe of Pittsburg discussed his support for Clark's anti-conscription stance. Clark, a long-time resident of Bowling Green, Missouri, was a politician in the Democratic Party. He served as a representative of Missouri from 1893 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1921. From 1911 to 1919 he served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
