John H. Leathers letter to Champ Clark - April 27, 1917

Transcript

Louisville, [Kentucky] April 27, 1917 Hon. Champ Clark, House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. My Dear Mr. Clark:- Will you permit me, an old soldier of the “lost cause” who had the honor of serving in a famous command, to extend to you his congratulations as well as his thanks and appreciation for your great speech delivered the other day on this military subject. I have reached the time of life when probably I cannot take up readily new ideas but it seems to that the spirit of patriotism is not dead yet in this country and that the youth of our land, when the occasion requires, would fully maintain the glory of their fathers on a thousand battlefields in the past and they were men who did not need to be conscripted. I cannot help but feel the position you take is right nd that every opportunity should be given to the men to volunteer in our army before other means are adopted. I have the honor to remain, Your obedient servant, John H Leathiers
