Pocahontas, [Arkansas] April 26th 1917 Hon Champ Clark - Washington D.C. Dear M5 Clark --- The enclosed I gather from Little Rock, Arkansas daily - I said Hurrah for Champ Clark and proclaimed that I had said for years you had more brains than any of them and that now I was willing to say that you had more real intelligence and statesmanship than all of them including the entire delegation from England and France who are over here as I opine trying to advise you fellows how to manage our Govermental affairs - I am with you now and forever more and shall continue as long as I have voice to Howl for Champ Clark - More than twenty five years ago and before you lectured at West Plains [Missouri] - after reading a sketch of one of your characteristic Speeches I yelled for you and have continued ever since and expect to as long as both of us live - Sincerely yours J.W. Description | In this April 26, 1917, letter to Champ Clark, J.W. Meeks of Pocahontas, Arkansas discussed his support for Clark's anti-war stance and included a newspaper clipping. Clark, a long-time resident of Bowling Green, Missouri, was a politician in the Democratic Party. He served as a representative of Missouri from 1893 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1921. From 1911 to 1919 he served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. |
