Atlanta [Georgia] April 26th 1917 Hon Champ. Clark MC From Masina I have Read your Speech or a Part of it that you Made on the Floor of the House In Congress Yesterday the 25 In this Mornings Atlanta Constitution and I want to thank You for your words and your Principals As Expressed they show clearly to my friend they are a Bove the $ Marke the 500 000 Mind that Mr. Wilson is Hollerin and whooping is wanted for service Hear at home In Case of a Revolt a Gainst the oppression and Robing of a System of Government no other People Have ever had to Contend with and now to Be able to Defend the oppression they want a Law past to Conscript Men young Men Into an army of Preparedness Hear at Home for this is no People that Can sail an army a cross 5000 miles of water and Land on American Soil and Hold It AGain Hon Champ Clarks I want to thank you For your words on the Floor of Congress and I will Preserve them For my children to Read So they May Know Champ Clark was opposed to Inslaving them to Mamous Greed In 1917 I hope that the Grate give of all Good will Spare you and Give you Wisdom and Strength to Fight for truth and Honor I am yours Most Repsectfully JM Gassaway 128 Lovejoy St Atlanta [Georgia]

Description In this April 26, 1917, letter to Champ Clark, J. Gassaway of Atlanta, Georgia discussed his support for Clark's anti-conscription stance. Clark, a long-time resident of Bowling Green, Missouri, was a politician in the Democratic Party. He served as a representative of Missouri from 1893 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1921. From 1911 to 1919 he served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
