Spring Creek, [Missouri] [April 25, 1917] Speaker Champ Clark of the House of Representatives Washington D.C. Honorable Sir just had your stand in regard to selection Draft in the U.S. Army for foreighen service Cant express our gratitiude for the stand you take only ask a full assurance that you will stay with the people on this [ms illegible: 1 wd] til – freezes over this whole neighborhood is with you and there is no question that if the [ms illegible: 1 wd] be a vote cast in this the result would be 3 to 1 against it. We are farmers not governed by the 8 hour day

Description | In this April 25, 1917, letter to Champ Clark, J.H. Pillman of Spring Creek, Missouri discussed his support for Clark's anti-conscription stance. Clark, a long-time resident of Bowling Green, Missouri, was a politician in the Democratic Party. He served as a representative of Missouri from 1893 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1921. From 1911 to 1919 he served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. |
