Mexico [Missouri] April 26 1917 Hon. Champ Clark Washington D.C. Dear Mr. Clark-:In this April 26, 1917, letter to Champ Clark, Dr. Robert C. Strode of Mexico, Missouri discussed his support for Clark's anti-conscription stance. Clark, a long-time resident of Bowling Green, Missouri, was a politician in the Democratic Party. He served as a representative of Missouri from 1893 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1921. From 1911 to 1919 he served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. You doubtless will not remember me personnally but I and one of your constituents; and have watched the administration very closely since Mr. Wilson was inaugurated and I think he has made a wonderful President, but in my opinion he is wrong in advocating the conscription system I want to congratulate you most heartily on your stand against conscription I have been against conscription since it was first mentioned and have been criticized very severely by some of my associates but I am glad that people as well informed and capable as yourself and Senator Reed are coming out to flatly against this bill. Again thanking you for the efficient representation you are giving us I remain as ever Yours truly Robert C. Strode M.D. Mexico [Missouri]
