,U.S.A., [December] 18, 1918. Lieutenant- Colonel Bennett C. Clark, Asst. Chief of Staff 88th Division American Expeditionary Forces in France via New York: Dear Bennett: Harvey Pringle is dead of pneumonia. - Mrs Burrill has sued Vol. Hendricks for $20,000.00 for Breach of promise. - After being one of the Ball bellweathers, James N. Davis is not to be Probate Clerk, which was the moving cause of his activities. The judge threw him down & appoints Guy Woods! - Sold my Georgia Orchard Stock for $600.00 cash, which is about what it cost me, So much the good. - There is a glimmer of a chance for us to get out whole on the Gaseline Saved Hope so. - It rained 4 days and nights; but cleared up yesterday and is bright & cold to-day. - Rev. Dr. Couder very sick. Wilfley acting Chaplain. - Going to have only 3 days Christmas Holidays. - Ex. Congressman & Congressmen- Elect Victor Berger being tried under Espionage Act before Judge Landis in Chicago. Berger beat Stafford last month. - Much opposition developing to International League (one of [Woodrow Wilson] 14 points. - I was in Senate a few minutes since & Knox makeing strong speech against it. – Ex-Representative & Ex-Senator, Gen. Charles Dick, Republican of Ohio, who was beaten for Congress last month by Democrat in District normally Republican by 6,000 has started a boom for General [John] Pershing. - Last letter we had from you was dated [November] 18. Also had one cable. We are looking Eagerly for more letters. [ms illegible: 1wd] Johnson has introduced Resolution demanding to know why our troops are in Russia & what they are doing there. - I see Governor France is representing Russia at Congress of Versailles! - Excerpts from my Baltimore [Maryland] speech are being circulated in papers. Press comments favorable. - Setters praise it. - Flu bad in Country – awful in Missouri. I enclose letter from Rufus Jackson suggesting that you locate

in Mexico to practice law. Dr. J.T.M. Johnson & unmarried daughter here yesterday. He wants to locate in [Saint Louis, Missouri]. Says he will make you attorney for Bank & Trust Co. - which he says would give you a living from the start. He is froze to run for senate unless (so he says) I do. He is anxious for me to run for President. He knows so little about Missouri affairs that he thought Missouri went dry last month, though it went wet by 87,000! I think, however that the legislature will ratify Federal Prohibition amendment. He wants to take Howard back but Howard want Aviation Commission. Dr. says Titus is getting $3,000.00 per annum now. - Mann looks bad but is active as ever. He gave me 2 jars of Preserves of his own making - very good preserves too. - John J. Wellsville wants to be Asst. Secretary of State Senate & Jim McQuie’s pa wants to be Chaplain there of. - Wally has Eresypilas in his Ear. - I enclose some clips which may interest you. - Harper & Bro. very anxious to publish my Auto-Biography. - I enclose letter to Ambassador to England, Jno. W. Davis of West [Virginia], whom you remember was Member of House Solicitor Genral. - Your mother & I both well. - I never felt better. - Paul Sanderson invalided home on account of wounded. - Gove. Williams of [Oklahoma] just in. Sends love to you. He wants to be U.S. Dist. Judge. Whole delegation for him, but Atty. - Gen. Claims he has not judicial temperament! Scott Ferris & wife both at home sick. - F.A. Mayhall still herein search of office. Was offered $1800.00 place but declined it. Great fool! By the way Shack is very anxious for interview with you. Think he wants you to locate him in his Dist. - to run against Nelson! - So you see you have some prospects in life. Your loving Father, Champ Clark Cpt. Description | In this December 18, 1918 letter to his son Bennett, Champ Clark discussed local and national politics, as well as President Woodrow Wilson's trip to Europe. Champ Clark, a long-time resident of Bowling Green, Missouri, was a politician in the Democratic Party. He served as a representative of Missouri from 1893 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1921. From 1911 to 1919 he served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. Bennett Clark served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 140th Regiment, 35th Division and as Assistant Chief of Staff for the 88th Division during World War I, and was Missouri State Senator from 1933 to 1945. |
