[July 29, 1918] Lieut Col Bennett C. Clark somewhere in La belle France Mon Cher Ami Bennett Upon request your father send me your address and I assume fun it is a pleasure for me to write this to you fine Father writes to me that he thinks you are near the Swiss frontier – that being the case, you are undoubtedly now in my native country Alsace, and if so in reaching the swiss frontier I think you must have passed within a ½ mile of my native village Mollou- which is near a place called Wesserling through which you must have passed in order to get near Thann which city is now close to fighting line Non mon Cher Bennett nothing would please me more than, ( if you have the chance) for you to visit my native village Mollou I have three Sisters there they are all poor people there, but I know they would be the happiest mortals on Earth, were they to meet the son of my best Friend – and I assume you they would do the very best for you – Our Friend John B. Thru of this place has a brother also living there. Our friend Thebeau Kaemmerlin has relatives in the village Now I do hope that Gen Pershing with his American Boys will soon bring an end to this war, and that you will come back home safe and sound, then in the event you are able to see my people, we can surely have a grand let talk together about Glorious Alsace – May God bless you and take care of you Votre Amis Casper Ehrhard

Description In this July 29, 1918 letter to Bennett Clark, Casper Ehrhard introduced himself as a friend of Bennett's father, Champ, and encouraged Bennett to visit Mollou. Champ Clark, a long-time resident of Bowling Green, Missouri, was a politician in the Democratic Party. He served as a representative of Missouri from 1893 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1921. From 1911 to 1919 he served as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. Bennett Clark served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 140th Regiment, 35th Division and as Assistant Chief of Staff for the 88th Division during World War I, and was Missouri State Senator from 1933 to 1945.
