LITTLE ROCK [Arkansas] April 26, 1917. Hon. Champ Clark, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. Dear Honored Sir: I wish to congratulate you on the firm stand you have taken against the Conscription Bill. I have written also letters to our two senators, Robinson and Kirby, urging them to stand with you. I voted for [Woodrow] Wilson on the record of his first term, not expecting him to become in effect a military dictator. Then again, I am a Democrat, and it is undemocratic to either fight the battles of the King of England or to conscript free Americans to the fighting. You doubtless have forgotten me but I was in Kentucky University during your short stay. My wife was a schoolmate of your Sister Lizzie. I knew your father well. I have enjoyed very much your success in public life, and if you want to be our next President, defeat this Draft measure, and the people of the United States will be ready to give you the Presidency in the next campaign. Most respectfully and sincerley, C.C. Cline 2317 Summit Ave Little Rock CCC/LD
