[Missouri ] Brigade [Headquarters] Camp Doniphan Fort Sill [Oklahoma] [September] 11, 1917. Dear Folks: As I wired you the other night I was suddenly ordered here in advance of my regiment to attend the school of Musketry. General Clark and Col. Linxwiler raised the dickens about me leaving saying that they needed me with the regiment and I hated to come but General Clark says that he will get me ordered to return to the regiment just as soon as they get down here which will be within a week or ten days. This is going to be a tremendous camp. I thought the one at Nevada was big but that there is no comparison at all. I feel fine and am very comfortably situated. But I will be mighty glad when

the troops get here and I am returned to my own regiment. Dad, don’t forget to see if you can do anything in a quiet way and without letting on that I have anything to do with it, to see that our regiment is one of those that is not broken up in the reorganization I wrote you about. So far as I am personally concerned, it doesn’t matter for General Clark has made arrangements in the event that the Sixth is squeezed out to have me transferred to the Fourth with my present rank but I would infintely prefer to stay with the Sixth and don’t want them squeezed out. I hope that you little things are getting along all right and are well and cheerful. You needn’t worry about me because I was never so well in my life. It doesn’t look to me like the war can go very much

longer. I sent you back the proofs of my picture with a notation on the backs of the ones I wanted finished. Please have Harris-Ewing finish them up, deliver you as many as you want of them, send me the rest here, and send me the bill here. Take good care of yourselves and come to see me when congress adjourns. With lots of love, Your devoted son, Bennett I read Dad’s speech at Monmouth. It was fine.
