A.M. Van Allen letter to Champ Clark - April 26, 1917

Transcript

[Mount Pleasant], Iowa April 26 ” 1917 Hon Champ Clark [Washington, D.C.] Dear Sir I desire to thank you for the position you have taken with reference to conscription. I have no boys to go and I am a Republican, so that I cant be charged with being either against it for personal reasons or prejudiced in your favor. If the President wants to know how the people of the west feel on the subject of war and conscription, let him take a vote. It will be against him at the rate of 100 to 1. Has Congress been reduced to the condition of a Russian Duma and ceased to represent the people who have elected it.” Yours Truly AM Van Allen
