Gentlemen: The Department is called on to decide a question as to whether Diesel engines under construction by you, as sub-contractor, for the U.S. submarine boats of the L class are covered by the provisions of the 8-hour law of June 19, 1912, and before reaching a conclusion in the premises it will be pleased to have a statement of your views on the subject. Description Letter from W.S. Benson, Secretary of the Navy Department addressed to the gentlemen of the Busch-Sulzer Brothers Diesel Engine Company. Benson inquired if the Diesel engines being constructed by the company for the U.S. submarine boats were covered by the eight-hour labor law. The eight-hour labor law of June 19, 1912 was applicable in every U.S. public contract which required the employment of mechanics and laborers.
