MAY 24 1919 May 22, 1919 From: Bureau of Steam Engineering To: Busch-Sulzer Bros.-Diesel Engine Co., St. Louis, [Missouri] Subject: Submarines L-5 to L-8 - Main engines- Repair plans of parts being manufactured by De La Vergne Mfg., Company, New York, [New York], care of. Reference: (a) Your letter May 6, 1919 (b) Bureau S.E. letter No. 417064-545-9 of May 10, 1919. Gentlemen: In accordance with reference (b) the subject of your letter, reference (a), has been taken up with Rear Admiral R.S. Griffin, Engineer in Chief, who has returned from abroad. You are informed that to all intents and purposes the De La Vergne Mfg. Company is the property of the Navy Department, which is being operated by its agent, the Cramp Shipbuilding Co. An Inspector of Machinery under the Bureau of Steam Engineering is on duty at this plant and he has been directed to protect in so far as possible plans from getting into the hands of an unauthorized person, and they are to be returned to him except when in use in the shops. A record is to be kept of all plans at all times and all plans are to be turned in to the Inspector of Machinery over Saturday and Sunday and re-issued on Monday morning. Dyson explained that the De La Vergne Manufacturing Company of New York, New York was property of the Navy Department. Dyson was an American naval officer and engineer. He is well known for his achievements in the field of engineering including designing machinery for naval vessels.
