Description Photograph of the Busch-Sulzer 500 HP Diesel marine engine on display. Rudolf Diesel invented the internal combustion engine and in 1894 patented his invention the "Diesel engine." In 1897 Adolphus Busch obtained the rights from Rudolf Diesel to build his engines in the United States. The Busch-Sulzer Brothers Diesel Engine Company was founded in February of 1911 by Adolphus Busch and produced submarine engines for the U.S. Navy during World War I.
