[September 13, 1918] Dear Home, Have not written you for about three weeks but as I said in my last letter I have been very busy. I got Virginia's letter a few days ago and two more Free Press' last night which is the second bunch so far. (July 5 & 12) We have been promised better mail service now and I hope we get it because it always takes your letters from five weeks ago. Just came from the lines again a few days ago and am getting a little rest. It has been raining early all the time since I got here so am doing nothing but sleeping. It is also beginning to get colder

now, The boys who have been during the winter say that we will have lots of rain before long and that it will rain for a month or two before it stops. The weather must be about the same as it is there. I got a new outfit of clothes day before yesterday and also got rid of all the "coodies." I was glad to get rid of them altho they stuck closer than any friends I ever had. One day I had a dozen and the next day there must have been a million. They are all sizes and ranks from very small privates to the largest of generals. Their speed is something enormous. They can go from your right ankle to your left wrist in less time than it would take

a Ford to make half the distance. This is what makes them so annoying. The papers tell of the enormous crop in the U.S. When you write tell me how much papa's wheat made also about the cattle, etc. Also tell me about the great country fair and the election. I suppose you have heard thru Belle that my man was defeated in [Minnesota] primary for Gov., but not badly. [ms illegible] Can get back from the lines again. From the Free Press school has again opened. I suppose Fran will go back to the same thing this year but you have not mentioned what. Tootch & Jim will

do. It would suit me fine to go back again this fall but there is nothing doing. By the way Jinx said she had recieved my medal from the university. Just keep it until I get home and I will put it with the rest. I will try to write them soon but can not give them much Minn news as I have not found a single man from the University in this outfit. Must close now but will write just as soon as I get back again. As ever Hamp. Cpl. Hampton B. Ball Co.B. 326 Infantry A.E.F.
