Hampton B. Ball letter to home - December 16, 1918
Transcript
[December 16, 1918] Dear Home, I am another week nearer home but have not moved yet. We are still in the same old town waiting for the word to either go home or some where else. I hope it is home because I have been in this country long enough. Nothing out of the ordinary happened last week except I had the tooth ache one day and got to miss a hike in the rain in order to see the dentist. It is the first time I have had such luck for a long time. also got out of two more hours

drill today for the same reason and have to go back again day after tomorrow. I was away all day yesterday on pass. I walked about five miles over to another town and got a good feed and then walked back again. Just think of having to go five miles to buy an egg when we are living in a farmers village. But! The hens here dont seem to lay (eggs). We can buy potatoes here tho so we have plenty of fried which we cook ourselves in the fireplace. We are doing squads - east and squads - west and capturing machine guns, what ain't, five hours a day. We here we are getting ready to sail but we can not tell anything about it. From the way we are drilling it looks like we are preparing for a rabbit hunt or something. I will not be able to spend Xmas with you but I will be back soon after. I may beat this letter to the states and then I may not. You never can tell what is next in the army.
