Description United States Army Nurse’s uniform worn by Mary E. Stephenson at Base Hospital 21. Organized by Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, Base Hospital 21 operated in Rouen, France where Stephenson served from May 1917 until June 1919. When America entered the war, Base Hospital 21 was sent to a British sector to help with their chronic shortage of doctors and nurses. Stephenson was awarded the British Royal Red Cross bar for distinguished service. Each chevron on the sleeve represents six months of her overseas service. The shoulder patch bears the insignia of the 2nd U.S. Army Corps. Stephenson returned to St. Louis after the war where she worked for the Board of Education as a supervisor of nurses.
