Details

Title Leavitt Sketch - Chow Detail Arrives
Description Cartoon of soldiers in a trench waiting for their meal to arrive. It was drawn by Sergeant David Leavitt who served with a machine gun battalion in the 35th Division. The caption reads, “In The Vosges---The Chow Detail Arrives.” The 35th Division occupied trenches in the Vosges Mountains, a relatively quiet French sector in June 1918. After the war, Leavitt was known for his murals in St. Louis and Chicago. During World War II he developed a dye used to locate downed pilots in the ocean and he designed aircraft markings still in use today.
