[January 22, 1918] Valparaiso, Indiana Harbuck's Kitchen 7:30 Dear Estella: - I did mean to let you wait awhile for a letter but as my time is my own this evening I will visit with you awhile only I wish you were here in person. For some reason or other I have had the "blues" all day, no reason at all. We didn't work to-day, great sport I'm thinking. Last Saturday week ago we couldn't get to work on account of the snow storm. Every day will be Sunday by and by. - Alma is just recovering from an attack of appendicitis. The doctor (a very good friend of hers) wanted her, or rather thought it was best, she should have an operation but she couldnt see it that way. She went back to work last Thursday but doesn't feel as well as she should. - You asked me what I did evenings. Goodness ask me what don't I do. I gave up two clubs so I could have a little more time for myself but its worse than

ever. I have given one night a week for the "Red Cross." I like the work very much but can you imagine my thoughts when making the bandages At times I felt like crying, but everybody seemed so bright and happy that I smiled instead. Henry received his questions and there is no doubt that he will be in class I It frightens me every time I think about it. I only hope and pray his eyes will keep him out for a-while longer. I haven't seen him for three weeks just imagine we are getting to be strangers. I was in hopes he would have been over last evening and stayed until to-night that is if he didn't have to work to-day. I suppose I'll see him next Sunday. - So your mother put up some more sausages. Just tell her I think of the good ones I ate last summer quite often. We can't have such things in [Valparaiso]. I do hope there will be another time when I can again visit you people - By the way Stella I wish you would tell

night. They sure do have good times. I wish I had my beau as handy as Emma has hers - Well Stella guess I'll ring off. Am going to write Henry a note and then read. Schuy. brought me two good books and I have loads of good magazines. I [crocheted] all day finished a yoke for a "Teddy Bear" its the last one I'm going to make, am going to use emb. and lace for the others. I'm going to cut down on work. Have decided to learn how to knit so if Henry must leave for Training camp he will at least have a few warm things to wear so many of the boys haven't even been supplied. Here is hoping he won't have to go. I suppose Charlie is out of it, if he is 31 one he sure is. - Hope you will write sooner than you did the last time Lovingly Meta.
