March 19, [1918]. My Dearest Estella: - This is a beautiful nite really too awful nice to sleep. and How I long to be with you. We have been having some bridge building the last two days at the river and just came in tonite. Had a good time while gone althou had a lot of real work to do also. I was over in the office just a while ago and, the Captian told me I could be quite sure of either staying here at this camp or else at Fort Ben Harrison at Indianapolis for four months. I am

to train new men, and Dearest you really don't or cannot understand how I feel about it. If they take this co. away with out me I shall be tempted so, strongly to do something to get "busted" so as to be sent over. I have worked hard alongside this bunch and they all like me I know and to be kept here while they get a chance to go on is really to much and I am going to be awful peeved. Maybe I can help by staying here, but there are other men who can stay who are not

as able to go as I am. But I am not going to worry a whole lot about that right now as we won't any go for a couple weeks yet and maybe I'll go. Daling I want to go. After being in this long and all I just feel like all the time from now on I stay here that, I am being kept in a sissys or weaklings place. Sweetheart I hope you understand me it is not, that I don't want to stay near you, but I want to do my best & come back to you as soon as possible.

Description | On March 19, 1918, after having found out that he will likely stay in the states and train soldiers, George A. Holmes wrote to his paramour Estella Wilferth of his frustration and desire to fight in France. He threatened to “do something to get busted” so that he will be sent into battle. At the time this letter was written, Sergeant Holmes was in training at Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky. |
