August 20 [1919] Brest, France. Dr. [Henry Milton] Whelpley 415 Clark St. St. Louis,[Missouri] Dear Dr. Whelpley, We are anchored in the Harbor of Brest France, since August 4th 1919., during which time I had a 5 days leave to Paris. We are delayed here on account of scarcity of American troops in France now. There are some rumors about taking Prisoners of war, back to Germany on American steamers, but I think it is only a rumor and nothing else. I suppose we will merely be anchored here until we gather enough troops to carry home.

Enclosed you will find a set of pictures of my floating home and the interior of same. I hope, they will be of interest to you. These pictures show parts of a ship but not the life on any ship. Last Sunday, I was surprised by meeting F. Smith of Chicago, one our classmates of 1918. He and I walked into each other on the main street of Brest. We we both surprised to meet each other. He thought that I was out of service long ago and I had the same thought of him. Smith is on the [USS Graf Waldersee]. I mention that for your information.
