Ayeres, Var. France. Christmas Day 3 P.M. 10 A.M. St. Louis time [December 28, 1918] Dear Professor, We just finished our Christmas dinner & was fine considering that we are in foreign country. Last night the Red Cross gave a big party for the benefit of the enlisted men & nurses & we had a grand time. Santa Claus was on the job with his presents for the boys & also had a fine tree. So even if the weather here is like our spring it made us seen like it was Christmas anyway. The flower & everything

[page 2] here is growing, even orange trees, we ate some of the oranges from trees in the garden belonging to the hotel where we are stationed. Were on the Rivera of the Meditteranean Sea surrounded by big hills all around us so it never gets real cold here and in former years was a summer resort. The government has leased 8 hotels here & were turned in to hospitals, at present we have about 2500 patients in them, but they come and go all the time. We have sent quiet a few back to the states within the last month, those

[page 3] men in classes B. & C., class A men usualy are sent back to there organizations. I have charge of the Medical supplies & do all the compounding for all the hotels & keeps me pretty busy all though most of the patients here are convelescents & dont need much attention, outside of one of our hotels which has all surgical cases & they have about 800 patients at present. I have quiet a large stock of drugs & chemicals enough to last another year if necessary. I would like to see a copy of the Meyer [Brothers] Druggists
