Base Hospital June 20, 1918 Dear Doctor Whelpley, The postal from Excelsior Springs was forwarded from Fort Oglettoge and reached me today. It pleased me very much and now I am sorry that I did not follow my intention of writing you. For, that has been on my mind for quite a while. This is quite a place. We have a capacity of over 1500, with more than 1000 patients in the hospital now. That requires a great number of surgical operations. We have had about 275 this month already, and expect to reach the 400 mark before July 1st. I certainly did not expect

such a splendid assignment. As chief of the surgical service I have a position as good as any surgeon can expect. There is much experience which will be of future benefits to me when I return to civil practice, whenever that will be. I do miss my friends. There are few men here who hail from our part of the country. One Lieutenant (H. G. Ruess) from East St. Louis, and another from Freeport, Illinois are the closest former neighbors that are with me here among the sixty or more medical officers on duty in our hospital. That does not include the many others who are in the camp, in one capacity or another. They are however almost all good fellows. Many of them high type men

from the Eastern and New England States. So you see I am meeting men whom I never could have met otherwise. You have been kind enough to send the Meyer Brothers Druggist to me at home. I would appreciate a change of address on your mailing list to Major Robert E. Schlueter, M.R.C., Base Hospital, Camp Hancock Augusta, Georgia. Mrs. Schlueter is here and it takes only about twenty or twenty five minutes on the street cars to go from the hospital to where she lives. What is more, I can go to the city almost every

evening. On Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, is a half holiday with us and even I can leave during the afternoon as a rule. The weather is fine. Warm during the day but the nights are usually cool. The scenery very pretty on account of the hills .From my room there is a grand view. Had expect to come home in May but felt it best to stay. So it will be August or September before I can get another opportunity. With Cordial greetings to yourself and Mrs. Whelpley. Also our mutual friends whom you might chance to meet, I am very truly yours [Robert E.] Schlueter
