July 1, 1918.Dear Doctor Whelpley: - Just a few lines to let you know what I am doing. (I have been transferred from the San Francisco Naval Training Station to the University of Minnesota School of Medicine: for a six month course in Bacteriology, Anatomy, Dentistry, Minor Surgery, Material Media, Physiology, Chemistry, Dietetics Practical nursing, and intensive drilling for work with the Marines there where a hundred men picked from the Pacific Fleet and I happened to be one of the hundred to take the course

[page 2] One man out of the hundred is picked to take special training in operating room work and “by gosh!” I have been nominated for the job. Kind of lucky, I believe. The dean of the school says he wants to send me away as an operating room expert. This includes instruction in X-ray also. So you see I haven’t much time for foolishness. I give mine anaesthetics last Saturday at the University Hospital. It is built to accommodate 150 patients. I am quartered at the Radisson Hotel splendid rooms

Description | Philip M. Chiles sent this letter to Dr. Henry Milton Whelpley. Dr. Whelpley was the dean of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and editor of the Meyer Brothers Druggist magazine. In this letter, Chiles explained that he had been transferred from the San Francisco Naval Training Station to the University of Minnesota, School of Medicine for a six month course in bacteriology, anatomy, and several other subjects. This letter was written on Hotel Radisson letterhead. |
