Jefferson Barracks [Missouri] [March] - 2 - 1918 Dr. [Henry Milton] Whelpley St. Louis [Missouri] Dear Dean, your letter and also the Meyer Brother Druggist was received and both exceedingly interesting, especially the letter. As you undoubtedly know the druggist, is not getting his recognition as he should, in the army; we all hope for the Edmond’s Bill to become a law before long. Until late I have been working in the ward as medication nurse, as do the majority of druggist in the army. But now I am in the laboratory which appeals to me better (an opportunity to learn an

important side line for the drugstore (urinalysis & Wasserman Test.) I was recommended to the Major Ronald by one of my friends to fill the vacancy in the laboratory. The major requested that I report to him & after a short interview, he ordered me to appear for duty, the next morning; which I did. The laboratory work here consists mainly of bacteriology as we did not go into great detail in this branch, you can readily see, there is plenty to learn for me. I would have written sooner; but being very busy I could not find time, conveniently enough for this letter, until I decided there must be no longer delay. Microscopy without a doubt helped me to secure this place in the army Dean, were I to answer that question you asked about 3 years ago namely: - “Of what use is microscopy to the druggist” I would make an addition to my answer, something like this – and to help the druggist (under present army regulation) to get a better position in the army.

It is not necessary to say that we made quite a study of the urine in our senior microscopy; therefore after being told once, their method (Post Hasft) of examining the urine, I was able to proceed with the analysis since the first day. The Captain Constant Wilson passes on the urine microscopical exam. Thanking you for your personal letter and that I may hear from you again (when it is most convenient) I remain, Respectfully yours, Phil Neu. c/o Laboratory Post Hospital. P.S. There are several pharmacist friends, that would appreciate a sample copy of Meyer Bros Druggist you made mention of.
