Sunday Morning San Francisco [California] April 21, 1918. My Dear Doctor Whelpley: - Just a few lines to let you know that I am well and happy. Have never felt better in my life and never looked better I weigh one hundred and fifty pounds stripped now. When I entered the Navy I weighed one hundred thirty. So you see what the Navy does for us.

[page 2] Doctor, this is the greatest life in the world, also the best. We receive the best of treatment in all respects and sure look it. We live in tents all year round. go to sleep at nine o’clock and “hit the deck” at five thirty every morning. Have fifteen minutes to clean up then answer muster and go through a half hours calesthenic exercise. Breakfast at seven. Then loaf until eight. Drill from eight until nine. Then classes. We attend a different lecture every hour. Except when we have chemistry laboratory or pharmaceutical laboratory which lasts from ten until twelve

[page 3] The days work is over at four p.m. We wash our clothes between four and five. “Chow” that is supper at five. We have dinner at twelve. Band concerts three times a day, from twelve until one, three to four, and eight to nine. I am now in charge of the dispensary and act as assistant instructor in the pharmaceutical labratory. Expect to leave here soon as I have been out here since the first of August 1917.

[page 4] Albert Couch [1915] a classmate of mine is out here and Walter good [1917] just left here for Mare Island. give my regard to all the boys also to Dr. Caspari and tell them to write to me I have sent some pictures to my home 3004 a Henrietta st and if you ever have occasion to pass near there drop in. Tell Prof. Hemm that if he needs an assistant after 1921 I’ll be ready. give my respects to Dr. Suppan and tell them all that “I’m a ripping, milling, made for killing regular sailor man.” yours respectfully Phil L.
