Base Hospital Camp Shelby [Mississippi] August 31 [1918] [Henry Milton] Whelpley Ph.G. M.D. 415 Clark ave [St. Louis, Missouri] My Dear Doctor. I wish to acknowledge receipt of a letter and copies of Journal the latter I gave to the Pharmacists in the Dispensary at the Base Hospital who appreciated same especially the price list which appealed to their practical nature. On inquiry no St. Louis [College] Ph. G. could be found in any part of the Camp at the present time. I am located at the Base Hospital in the Ear, Nose and Throat Department doing clinical work and have plenty of it. The Hospital has capacity of 2000 beds, and at present contains 1400 patients. There are about 100 Medical Officers at the Base Hospital besides those attached to other parts of the Camp.

There are about 35,000 troops at Camp Shelby, which is 7x9 miles in extent located 12 miles from Hattiesburg in Pine forest country with the Pine removed the climate is hot in day time, but nights are cool, being only 60 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Description | Nathaniel Saenger sent this letter to Dr. Henry Milton Whelpley. Dr. Whelpley was the dean of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and editor of the Meyer Brothers Druggist magazine. In this letter, Saenger described life in the camp and explained that he was doing clinical work in the ear, nose and throat department at the hospital. This letter was written on Y.M.C.A. letterhead. |
