[December] 23, 1918 Dear [Henry Millton] Whelpley St. Louis [Missouri] Dear Doctor:- Enclosed is a little clipping from todays [Kansas City] times mentioning a graduate of our college, Shanklin, gilkerson of Warrensburg , [Missouri] as receiving the distinguished service cross. You probably remember him, as he finished about 1904 or 1905. I that, possibly you could use the item in the [Meyers Brothers] Druggist – showing at least one of [St.[Louis College of Pharmacy] boy as being cited for bravery. [newspaper clipping] The Kansas City Times, Monday, December 23, 1918. Got the Cross for Bravery. [sketch of Shanklin Gilkerson] Sergt. Shanklin Ebenezer Gilkerson, 167th Ambulance Company, who was awarded the distinguished service cross for extraordinary heroism in action at St. Benoit, France, September 16, 1918. While the regimental dressing station was under fire Sergeant Gilkerson volunteered to lead a squad of litter bearers to rescue several wounded men of another regiment, who had been caught in a heavy barrage. Although wounded himself, the sergeant led the squad for a distance of three kilometers through a heavy bombardment. He brought in one officer and seven severely wounded soldiers without losing any of his men. Gilkerson’s mother, Mrs. M. M. Gilkerson, and his sister, Mrs. Porter Stone, live near Independence. A brother, Frank Gilkerson, lives at 3517 Jefferson Street. Gilkerson is a former resident of Warrensburg, [Missouri], but enlisted from Claremore, [Oklahoma].

Description | Murray Williams sent this letter to Dr. Henry Milton Whelpley. Dr. Whelpley was the dean of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and editor of the Meyer Brothers Druggist magazine. Williams wrote that a student from the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy had received the Distinguished Service Cross. This letter was written on Vernaz Drug Company letterhead. |
