Louis C. McDaniel sent this letter to Dr. Henry Milton Whelpley. Dr. Whelpley was the dean of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and editor of the Meyer Brothers Druggist magazine. McDaniel described life in the camp since the war ended and wrote that he had done very little except eat and sleep.

here but eat & sleep, & I know that there are not many that Can Say that, Still we do are grand duty about two days a month & then that is all unless Called upon for Some Thing extra Have been out to different Camps with prisoners but only for a few days So the way I have had things here it dont seem like I have done any thing. & now the question is when are we going to get discharged that is all you can hear a fellow talk about & I am very anxious

I have been trying to get home by Xmas but think I will have to stay here now until I go for good. not of gotten on the outside or rather in Civilian life & now That everything is over I am ready to be back in Civilian life they sure did Some Celebrating here when New Came That War was over of Course not much here but in Cincinnati [Ohio] just accross river they had every thing for the boys & were about three hundred boys from here in parade in Cincinnati & altogether I think there was about Three Thousand & gave the boys a reception after parade was over,

3 I have met a few of the boys from St. Louis that were going through here but So many different Names that it is to much to remember but now I dont think there are any stationed here from St. Louis There are a few here from St. Louis & Alton that were there & Some of them are gone now & already back home well I guess I have written about all the News for now & as you may not be able to read what I have written
