[October 27, 1918] Dr. [Henry Milton Whelpley] Dear Doctor:- Your letter of recent date, and also package of addresses and clippings received. As where a short vacation from Saturday 1 P.M. until 930 PM Sunday, We generally like to a change of scene, where we are able to peruse the correspondence of our friends, in peace amid different surroundings. In the present instance I am located in this hotel, upon the historic Mountain well known in history. Was interested in your numerous writings, and also in the address of Mr. S. B. Simpson given at the School of Pharmacy in honor of your 25th Anniversary as a teacher. It certainly was an able address, and I want to compliment him upon it [ms illegible: 1 wd] this late stage. You said that you were going to publish part of the letter I sent to Mr. Simpson in your journal. I hope you will not publish that part of the letter pertaining to gas mask instruction as that might place me in bad light with the government, and might help the Enemy. I know that you will safe guard me in anything you may publish. I am still located at [Camp Greenley] and expect my orders very soon as the men are being sent away very rapidly now from the camp. I have been taking special course in Military Surgery, which requires my going to Chattanooga [Tennessee] University of Chattanooga

Each day for the study of anatomy and operations technique. The study here in each branch is very thorough. I have finished the anotomical course. Of course we do not know what minute the order comes from Washington D.C. to proceed to some base hospital, so am on the anxious seat more or less. I certainly would like to finish this instruction it is the most wonderful way of learning, although exceedingly strenuous. The military Surgery course here is considered the cream, and also the hardest of all the special courses here I am glad I was allotted to same. News is very scarce in the camp as we are kept on the go so much that it is impossible to gossip. This Soldier life while strenuous is great and if I were able to have my family near me, would be willing to end my days as a soldier surgeon. I wish you would convey my kindest regards to our Simpson and also many of my friends [ms illegible: 1 wd] the home of the Meyer [Brothers] Drug Co. tell them I am feeling fine.
