Camp Sheridan, [Alabama], [August] 22, 1918. To [Henry Milton] Whelpley Editor Meyer [Brothers] Druggist, Sirs: I am now in the Medical Dept. 46th U.S., Inf., I was formerally in charge of the Pharmacy at the State Hosp. Olgin, [Illinois]. I have seen less than 3 months service in the med. dept. but have seen enough mistakes in dispensing to indorse immediate passage of the Edmonds Bill. The following are the most interesting incidents. A private of over a years service in the med dept. insisted on

[page 2] preparing ammoniated mercury oint. by adding Arom. Spts. of ammonia to Blue Oint. (A very simple way indeed). Another Prvt. of over a years med. service was about to dispense Acid Tonnic in place of Acetoniled to reduce a over high fevor. Another Prvt. of over a years med. service dispensed a glass of slop water, containing some Mercuric chloride & some epsom salts because it had the characteristic taste of Epsom Salts in place of Epsom Salts solution. It has not caused any serious results.

[page 3] Sanitation is also badly neglected by Prvts. of over a years experience in Med. dept. I have seen medicine dispensed to over a hundred seemingly healthy soldiers out of the same glass that medicine was dispensed to syphilitics & T.B. patients without even rinsing the glass. It is surprising that the health of the soldier is what it is with these conditions to contend with.
