Moore Barracks Hosp. Shorncliffe, Kent [September] 18th 1917 Mr. Henry Whelpley, Dear Friend, I recd your most welcome letter yesterday. I am more than glad to hear from friends at home. I cannot say that I remember you but, know your brother Warren, quite well. I have been in the hospital here nearly a month. Rheumatism or, the doctors call it, “trench fever”. too much rain & mud I suppose. I am much better at present and, the doctor promised that I could go back to duty in a few days. I like the country very much and am treated good. I have nothing to complain of.

Everybody is in good spirits here and are confident of an early victory. I don’t think that Fritz can hold out much longer, we have beaten him at every turn and we will make him look sick before Xmas and I am anxious to be back and help with my gun. I am in the machine gun corps you know, I would appreciate any papers or reading material that you care to send me, Give my regards to all my friends (over)
