July 15, 1918. Camp Shelby [Mississippi] Dear Dr. Whelpley: Well I am still a recruit at this camp, that is I am still unassigned to any branch of service. Have been held back with about twelve other chemists for the chemical service two of the twelve left this morning for Long Island [New York] When and where I shall go I do not know. (I have now been in the army about seven weeks and during those seven weeks have done more different kinds of work than the same number of years in civil life.

[page 2] At present I am temporarily assigned to the Personnel Board in the Classification Dept. My work consists of interviewing the draftee as to his qualifications and consider in what branch of service he will be of of most use to the government. The work is very pleasant and interesting for one meets all classes of men some going as far as telling you their entire life history etc. Have been working at this line of work for two weeks including Sundays. There are no Sundays in the army. This camp is about 7 miles in width and about 10 miles in length situated in the midst of a pine forest. No wooden barracks are here

[page 3] everybody lives in tents. This is considered a very healthy climate but sometimes it gets awfully hot. I have been gaining in weight right along and feel perfectly well) Am writing these few lines while at leisure at the Personnel and since the work is about to begin will close, hoping this find you and the other members of the faculty OK I remain Respectfully yours H.A. Description | H. A. Vogler sent this letter to Dr. Henry Milton Whelpley. Dr. Whelpley was the dean of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and editor of the Meyer Brothers Druggist magazine. In this letter, Vogler described life in the camp and wrote that he was currently assigned to the Personnel Board in the Classification Department. He explained that he was a chemist and was being held back for the chemical service. This letter was written on Y.M.C.A. letterhead. |
