Transcript

De Soto, [Missouri], [November] 18, 1918 Dear Doctor Whelpley: How can I tell you that my darling Boy is dead. He died in France [October] 20th of Pneumonia, following influenza. I am crushed & prostated with grief. He was my joy & pride, & I thought he was the hope of my declining years. It don’t seem to me that I can ever get over this awful calamity that has befallen me. Nothing to live for – no one else so dear to me. I know you loved him & for that reason I am burdening you with my grief. I thank you with all my heart for your kindness to him. In deepest sorrow, yours fraternally G. A. Auerswald
