MEDICAL OFFICERS’ TRAINING CAMP Fort Riley, Kansas April 28, 1918. Dear Doctor: During this era of international warfare, you are undoubtedly considering whether or not you will offer your services to the government and humanity by joining the Medical Reserve Corps. You, like the rest of us, who have already joined the Colors, know very little about what a Medical man’s life in the Army is or what his duties will be after he has accepted a commission. In order to enlighten you as to these duties and to give you an idea as to what a Medical Training Camp is like we have prepared a Year Book of the Medical Officers’ Training Camp at Fort Riley, Kansas, which is complete from the beginning of the Training Camp. This book contains picture of all the organizations, which have been in camp since its start, and editorial matter describing each organization as well as much interesting matter regarding camp life. The other object of the publication is the financing of a Band for the Medical Department. The Government does not furnish funds for this purpose, so we have had to furnish some means of procuring the money, and we are doing this through the Year Book. We know that you are a patriotic citizen and will realize that music means to all of the men the Training Camp, and hope that you will see fit to subscribe for one of these books. Not only will you help a worthy cause, but you will also be able to get a clear idea as to what are the workings of the Medical Department and of the Training Camp. The book is 12 ½ x 14 inches and contains 224 pages. The paper and binding are of the very best quality. It is bound in khaki colored cloth. The cover design is the American Flag in colors. The price is $2.50 per copy. The book is now ready for delivery. There will be no personal profit for anyone, as all funds will be used in financing our Band. May we have your assistance and a check for one or more of these Books? Very truly yours, [signature] Maj., M.R.C. Mail Address: Year Book, M.O.T.C., Fort Riley, Kansas.

April 30, 1918. Major W. N. Kenzie, [Fort Riley], [Kansas] Dear Major Kenzie:-- I am writing to you in regard to Mr. E. G. Pelley, of De Soto, [Missouri], who is a member of our graduating class, this year. I have been teaching continuously since 1884 and never during that time have we had a more satisfactory all around student and citizen than is Mr. Pelley. In addition to the above statement, permit me to say that Mr. Pelley has been associated with Dr. G. A. Auerswald, of De Soto, during his vacations and even on Saturday and Sunday during his college work. With the doctor, he has acted as an assistant and had considerable training along the line which will make him useful at the Medical Officers’ Training Camp. I sincerely trust that you will be able to secure Mr. Pelley in your branch of service. This will be in direct line with making use of the most serviceable qualifications possessed by Mr. Pelley. I only regret that I cannot speak with you personally and testify to the exceptional character and ability of Mr. Pelley. He has been a student assistant for me and is very useful in an executive way. I realize how frequently letters must be written officers and that most of them are perfunctory in form. This communication is certainly an exception to any such rule, for I consider it a duty to put forth the facts as I have done. Very truly, [Henry Milton] Whelpley.
