[October] 20 – 1918 Dear Dr. Whelpley Your letter received some days ago. Owing to existing conditions here at laboratory and other happenings I have not been able answer any sooner. It looks bad right now for any visit with the club on coming Saturday night had hoped very much to be present but things have happened since writing you last and, are continually happening and I may be travelling a different direction by that time. At last something has materialized and I have been a second lieutenant since Wednesday of past week. With temporary duty at this laboratory, so I may receive other orders soon (knowing what is planned.) It takes about 10 days to get thru the tape and get a leave of absence as officer and even tho I could freely ask for one I would be unable to get

away by Saturday. The “flu” is subsiding here in D.C. but has taken it’s toll. I have been fortunate in escaping so far, however the force here is crippled just at present. Mr. Federer formerly with Eli Lilly who have been here with me for past 3 months also received his commission. We are assigned to the Supply Division of Sanitary Corps. In closing please remember me to the Club, trusting I may join in the meeting at a later date. Regards to you & yours Sincerely Lieut. Frantz F. Berg. P.S. address me at Army Medical Museum HBSt Southwest am giving up my room this week dont know where I’ll be at present writing Caution: On address do not make any mention of Sanitary Corps as you have heretofore. We have both military and civil post offices here and anything with a corps goes to corps headquarters first otherwise a plain address comes thru quicker.
