4118 Chesapeake St. N.W. Washington [December] 10, [1917] Dr. [Henry Milton] Whelpley St. Louis [Missouri] Dear Dr. Whelpley - Have been waiting for a November Meyer Bro’s Druggist not having received one I find this a good cause for writing you. Have now visited about all the “Wonders?” of the city and have to stay in a little more that have been doing. I suppose I am still a chemist but don’t know for sure have been working in the minus scale of thermometer for a month now testing masks, and have grown quite interested in them by virtue of realizing the importance of work regardless of conditions. Today things changed though and we found it warmer in ice box than out doors and took our coats off. Have had many interesting happenings here in the work and are beginning to believe that Germany is sorry she ever started “Gas.” I met Mr. Hilton of whom you spoke, found him a very congenial man, also attended the [Washington] Branch of A. Ph. A. meeting last Wednesday where the total attendance was 8 and myself nearly all present were from Agriculture Dept.

I met Dr. Stockberger there he being the chairman I applied for appointment to officers training camp but of course didn’t get it, So I have decided to resolve myself to my fate hoping that some day may get somewhere in this outfit if I am worth it. You asked about Lieut Boluebaugh of [Virginia] I never met him before he left here, he is in training section. In which position I would probably have been had my application which you recall I made last August been acted on. I have taken it up and now find that Men of draft age can not be commissioned but every time I land at experiment station I find a Bureau of Mines Employe who day before was a civilian of draft age wearing the gold & black. I suppose I should have been a street car conductor then I would know hope to pull the rope. But do as it now stands I’ve quit worrying about the matter and are just as happy as if I had yard full of commissions etc. that are to be had that way. There is now in formation a chemical corps for service in Europe, in which I may yet land. As long as I am in the service I might as well see the thing “over there”, then if I get back alive I will have seen something anyway. With Best Regards to you and yours – Remember me to everybody. Sincerely F. F. Berg – Private in F.S.S. G.D.S. S.C. M.D. U.S. N.A. not Degrees, but branch of service.
